Astronomy and the Moon
From sci-fiction buffs to astronomers and techno aficionados, space exploration has always inspired and fascinated every one of us. It is through science and our astronomers that today we know so much about the unlimited expanse of space and what lies beyond our trajectory. Marvelous achievements and discoveries have been made in the field astronomy. Astounding facts and secrets have been revealed about billions of universal bodies revolving around us at indefinite space and time. Being inhabitants of Earth, the astronomical objects which are closest to us have always fired up our imagination. Likewise the satellite which is nearest to Earth happens to be the moon. It is also our only natural satellite. Scientists have time and again studied this very astronomical body. Now we have arrived at a period when we can say almost convincingly that we cannot possibly know anything more about the moon than we already do. Thanks do the advanced and scientific technology that astronomers have used in the past and even at present to bring out these facts about the moon and inform us. Some scientists, though, differ with this opinion and believe there numerous things about the moon that need closer evaluations.
History was made when man first landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. The famous space shuttle that carried astronauts and his fellow crew members to moon was NASA's Apollo 11. It was during that time that the soil that covers the surface of moon was brought to earth and studied. The moon is mostly composed of rock but has a small core which is rich in iron. Its surface was created after the bombardment of asteroids. The moon came into being approximately 4.6 billion years ago. As a known fact, the moon rotates around earth. One orbit around Earth is completed in about 27 days. The mass is about 1.23 % of that of Earth's mass. The moon has no permanent atmosphere. It has no air and no water. Since the gravitational pull on the surface of the moon is too weak it lacks the ability to hold any kind of cover of gas around its surface.
Astronomy has had major breakthrough when it comes the observation of the moon. Images of moon were brought to us by Galileo Spacecraft. The breathtaking image appears to be a composite of three different colors. By having a look at the image one can identify the various compositions on the surface of the moon also.
Since moon is amazingly fascinating and never fails to capture the curiousity of human mind, it always turns out to be a great subject of interest to amateur astronomers. For anybody who wants have their experience subjects like astrophotography, the moon appears to be most curious and interesting astronomical to be studied. Those who work on history of astronomy or are associated with armchair astronomy, the moon again proves to the best and perfect object of study. There is no end to the information that one can dig out by conducting studies on moon. Even a small good quality telescope can be of lot of help. Increased magnification of the telescope can help one to see the intricate detail of the moon and its surface. Whether it is the mountains or mountain ranges, valleys or highlands and even the small but visible craters, one can know numerous amazing facts about the earth's only natural satellite through proper study. So, even though you may be an amateur astronomer, chances are that you can make interesting insights about various aspects that may be appealing to people. With talk of establishing a permanent settlement in moon doing rounds, the moon is quite literally becoming the flavor of the season among scientists.
